Kyphosis

SpringBack Chiropractic corrects hyperkyphosis and forward head posture using Advanced BioStructural Correction — rebuilding the thoracic spine's natural curve and restoring upright posture.

Kyphosis

What Is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis refers to an excessive rounding of the upper back (thoracic spine). A certain amount of thoracic kyphosis is completely normal — the thoracic spine is designed to have a moderate rearward curve. Hyperkyphosis, however, describes an exaggerated rounding that goes beyond the normal range, creating the characteristic “hunchback” or “dowager’s hump” appearance and significantly compromising function, breathing, and quality of life.

Hyperkyphosis is surprisingly common across all age groups:

  • Postural kyphosis — the most common type, driven by prolonged sitting, screen use, and forward head posture. Often seen in adolescents and young adults and highly responsive to structural correction.
  • Scheuermann’s kyphosis — a developmental condition where vertebral wedging creates a more rigid thoracic curve
  • Degenerative kyphosis — progressive vertebral compression fractures in older adults, often associated with osteoporosis
  • Compensatory kyphosis — the upper back rounds in compensation for structural problems elsewhere in the spine

Regardless of type, kyphosis imposes significant secondary consequences: neck pain, shoulder pain, reduced lung capacity, digestive issues from compression of the abdominal organs, fatigue from the constant muscular effort to maintain upright posture, and — critically — it accelerates degenerative disc disease throughout the spine.

The ABC Approach to Kyphosis

At SpringBack Chiropractic in Surprise, AZ, Dr. Patrick Bain’s approach to kyphosis is grounded in the mechanics of Advanced BioStructural Correction. ABC provides a crucial insight: the thoracic vertebrae that have shifted anteriorly (forward) are the primary structural driver of hyperkyphosis.

When thoracic vertebrae shift forward, the body compensates by increasing the posterior (backward) curvature of the thoracic spine — because there are no muscles positioned to pull these vertebrae back into alignment from behind. The rounding is literally the body’s compensation for bones it cannot self-correct. By systematically identifying and correcting these anterior thoracic misalignments, ABC allows the thoracic curve to reduce and the posture to improve — often dramatically and rapidly.

Patients who begin ABC at SpringBack Chiropractic are frequently amazed at how quickly their posture improves. Many have been told by other providers that their rounded back is “just how they are” or is “degenerative changes” that can’t be reversed. ABC often proves this assessment wrong.

Meningeal Releases and Kyphosis

One of the distinguishing features of ABC is the inclusion of meningeal releases — stretching of the dural tube (the membrane surrounding the spinal cord and brain). Tension in the meninges is a major contributor to thoracic kyphosis that is not addressed by any other chiropractic technique. When the meninges are chronically shortened and taut, they pull the spine into a flexed (rounded) posture from within.

The meningeal releases used in ABC gently stretch and decompress the dural tube, removing this internal tension and allowing the spine to extend and lengthen. Many patients describe a dramatic sense of “uncoiling” after meningeal work — as if something that has been pulling their spine forward for years has finally been released.

The chronic muscle strain, rib joint dysfunction, and disc degeneration associated with long-standing hyperkyphosis create a background of pain and inflammation that can make structural correction uncomfortable. Cold laser therapy at SpringBack Chiropractic addresses this by reducing inflammation in the thoracic facet joints and costovertebral joints, promoting disc healing, and helping the chronically overstretched posterior thoracic musculature recover as postural correction proceeds.

Nutrition and Kyphosis Prevention

In older adults particularly, kyphosis is strongly associated with osteoporosis and vertebral compression fractures. Nutrition Response Testing at SpringBack Chiropractic can identify specific nutritional factors affecting bone density — including not just calcium and vitamin D, but also vitamin K2 (which directs calcium into bone rather than arterial walls), magnesium, boron, and other bone-supportive nutrients. Addressing these factors is an important part of preventing further kyphotic progression in age-related cases.

What Kyphosis Correction Looks Like Over Time

The timeline for kyphosis correction depends on the severity of the curve, how long it has been present, and whether there is significant vertebral wedging or osteoporotic compression. For postural kyphosis in younger patients — which is purely the result of structural misalignment and muscle adaptation — significant improvement can often be seen within weeks of beginning ABC care.

For more established cases, improvement is progressive and cumulative. Patients typically report:

  • Reduced mid-back and neck pain within the first few weeks
  • Visible postural improvement, noticed by themselves and others
  • Improved breathing capacity as the thoracic cage opens
  • Reduced fatigue — because the body is no longer working overtime to fight postural collapse
  • Better confidence and self-perception as their posture transforms
